AUGUSTA, Ga. – Russell Kirks, a third-year student in the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University, has been appointed a delegate to the American Medical Association.
As one of only two student delegates from Georgia, Kirks will represent medical students’ interests in the association, help organize service projects and raise other students’ awareness of the organization and issues they will face as practicing physicians.
“I think as medical students, studying consumes so much of our time, that some of the issues that will face us as students and future physicians can slip by us,” Kirks said. “As a delegate, I’ll be working to make every one aware of those issues and cognizant of the things that will face us when we finish our residencies.”
The AMA, the largest organization of physicians and medical students in the United States, promotes the art and science of medicine for the betterment of the public health and to advance the interests of physicians and their patients.
Students involved in the association also develop community service projects across the country and have opportunities to hone their professional skills at national conferences.
Kirks, who will attend the association’s 2012 annual meeting in Chicago in June, is also working to develop a student chapter of the Medical Association of Georgia in Savannah, where he is completing rotations at GHSU’s Southeast Georgia Clinical Campus.
