The Model United Nations (MUN) team for Augusta State has been awarded a $ 2,000 scholarship by the National Collegiate Conference Association.
“We are excited to have been selected as one of three international recipients for this scholarship,” said Craig Albert, lecturer in the Department of Political Science and NMUN co-director. “The scholarship will be used to help pay the expenses of the National MUN team’s trip to New York City. Specifically, it will help cover the hotel costs.”
At last year’s conference, 19 ASU students attended the conference and competition. The students competed against more than 5,000 students from colleges and universities world-wide. The ASU students walked away with an Honorable Mention for overall performance and three Delegates’ awards. This year’s delegation will include 18 ASU students.
To prepare for this conference as well as their future careers, students are required to dress professionally when attending class. They also present research papers, book summaries, weekly readings, and practice debates throughout the semester. According to Martha Ginn, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science and NMUN co-director, the Model UN course can be demanding for students, but it helps to increase self-confidence, university involvement, and professional development.
