With high school’s end, the 2012 graduates of Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School danced onto a bigger stage in life knowing the past four years were much more than an act in a play.

“We can enter the collegiate world with the great understanding that our lives do not have to be limited to one specific goal,” said salutatorian Anna Hadsell, who will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Davidson’s unique course schedule allowed her class to explore their artistic interests and pursue strong academics every day, she said.

Frances Cheely says she barely slept the night before her graduation from T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School.

She woke up at 7:20 a.m. Sunday, with nothing much to do before her ceremony that evening besides find a pair of high heels to go with her gold gown.

She drove to Southgate, bought a pair of black pumps and was so nervous she forgot to eat before meeting friends backstage at James Brown Arena.

“I couldn’t sleep; I couldn’t eat; I’m just so happy and nervous and anxious,” Cheely said as she waited backstage. “And now my feet hurt.”

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred Saturday as the buses headed from Burke County to Six Flags Over Georgia. The trip was a reward to the sixth- and seventh-graders for scoring well on a state assessment test.

Officials say one bus slowed abruptly on Interstate 20 as it approached a construction site, setting off the collision.

The Augusta Canal’s flow might have to be slowed temporarily this year if the worsening drought continues to affect the Savannah River.

“The discussion in recent months has been that this is coming – and at some point we will have to curtail,” said Augusta Utilities Director Tom Wiedmeier.

The canal is a drinking-water source for about 160,000 households in the city, and its flow provides hydromechanical power that pumps raw water to the city’s filter plant off Highland Avenue, saving $ 1.5 million a year in energy costs.
