Homes sought for animals in roach-infested Macon shelter

MACON, Ga. — Macon’s animal control authorities are trying to find homes for dozens of animals as it fumigates its mice and roach-infested shelter.

The Telegraph newspaper reports that homes must be found for 78 dogs and 11 cats for at least three days and perhaps as many as five while the facility is cleaned.

Qualifying for July, November elections starts Wednesday

Candidate qualifying in Augusta for the July 31 general primary and nonpartisan Nov. 6 elections, with the exception of Augusta Commission and Richmond County school board, begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday and ends at noon Friday.

Candidates for the partisan races of sheriff, coroner, clerk of Superior Court, tax commissioner, probate judge, solicitor general and chief and presiding judges of Civil and Magistrate court qualify with Democratic or Republican party officials at their Augusta offices.

Local fans show excitement at Lady Antebellum concert

Sisters Mallory Givens and Kayla Rowe of Evans have been Lady Antebellum fans since the country trio’s first song.

On Tuesday, they were in the sold-out crowd at James Brown Arena to hear the hometown band perform.

Givens, 23, said her mother and a family friend joined Lady Antebellum’s fan club so they could buy tickets to the concert two days before the tickets were made available to the public.

“They’re from Augusta. We just wanted to come and support our hometown band,” Givens said.

The LPGA is idle this week, as it is nearly half the weeks of the year.

Augusta National Golf Club closed to members last weekend, and will remain so until its October re-opening.

Just saying.

LPGA commissioner Mike Whan made a curious comment to Forbes magazine in its most recent issue when asked directly: “Should Augusta National admit female members?”

“As the commissioner of the LPGA, I think Augusta should have a women’s tournament,” Whan said. “I don’t care if they have female members.”

‘Flesh-eating’ bacteria common, experts say

The “flesh-eating” bacteria that has brought nationwide attention to some being treated at Augusta’s Joseph M. Still Burn Center is not unusual, experts say.

Also known as necrotizing fasciitis, Aeromonas hydrophila is caused by fairly common bacteria called group A streptococcus that are typically found on the skin or in the throat.

Most of the infections from the bacteria are fairly mild, such as “strep throat” and impetigo or an itchy skin rash.

Angry, North Augusta man crashes porch, police say

NORTH AUGUSTA — Police said a 20-year-old man drove his car into his porch after he became angry over a change in dinner plans.

According to an incident report, North Augusta Public Safety officers were called to the 900 block of Medie Avenue around 8:40 p.m. Sunday when Mitchell Rowan Davis got into his 1993 BMW, drove through his front yard and struck the porch where his mother and 17-year-old brother were standing. Authorities said the porch rails were splintered when they arrived.

A few months ago, A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School senior Jarreth Caldwell got a tattoo of a flying bird on his back.

It was supposed to represent his growth as an individual and a desire to expand his horizons. But when he posted a photo on Facebook, his friends didn’t see it that way. They asked why he would get a tattoo of a bunny rabbit, of a three legged donkey. They seemed to see everything but a bird.

January murder of Augusta teen remains unsolved

Four months later, the death of a 16-year-old Academy of Richmond County student remains a mystery, police say, the only unsolved homicide in Augusta’s 10 cases this year.

Kyle Royal died after a Jan. 16 shooting outside Magic City, an unlicensed club at 3200 Mike Padgett Highway. Richmond County authorities believe the teen was fatally shot during a gunfire exchange around 2 a.m.

“It’s frustrating (for the family),” said Sgt. Bill Leisey, “but they understand that we’re not getting leads.”

Ga. triathlon proves fatal

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. — A participant in the swim portion of the Turtle Crawl Triathlon on Jekyll Island died Saturday, the Georgia State Patrol said.

The 44-year-old man suffered an apparent cardiac arrest and was rescued from the water by event lifeguards, said Eric Garvey, spokesman for the Jekyll Island Authority.

EMTs from the Jekyll Island Fire Department met the lifeguards on the beach and began performing CPR immediately, Garvey said.

The Georgia State Patrol said the EMTs responded at 8:15 a.m.
